About half our group went to Meteora for a weekend on our own. Though it took us awhile to actually get there, we had a blast.
We started off fairly early Saturday morning. There was some discussion about whether to take a 730am bus or a 930, but we eventually decided on 930 in an endeavor to save sleep. Good thing we did. Unfortunately none of Greece is very modern so it can be virtually impossible to find information online. Our transportation plan was the result of information the travel agent gave us and a picture of the printed bus schedule on a blog online. Clearly, quite trustworthy. As I’m sure you can imagine, things didn’t go well. We ended up taking the metro out to the airport (a 40 min ride), and then taking a bus back into town to the bus station. Missed our stop for the bus station because it wasn’t labeled, got off at a different but station and bought tickets to get on a another bus back to our destination. Finally made it and took the 1130am bus to Meteora. So what we thought was going to be a day of hiking in the rocks became a day mostly consumed by transportation.
The good news was that after getting on the actual bus to Meteora, everything was pretty smooth sailing. We found our hotel fairly easily and it was absolutely gorgeous. If you ever go to Meteora stay in the Tsikeli hotel. It’s family owned by awesome people who are super helpful and it looks like a log cabin, plus it has green space (you don’t see that in Athens- ever). We did have enough time to explore the rocks a little that evening and enjoy yet another sunset abroad. Back at the hotel after dinner we all curled up in blankets and had a lovely sleepover-type event, complete with back massages and people falling asleep on each other. (namely Chris using most of Jen’s blanket as a pillow)
Sunday was the day we dedicated to the monasteries. If you’re not familiar with Meteora, google it. Basically, there are beautiful monasteries built on gigantic rocks. We spent most of Sunday morning hikes to various monasteries and exploring them. Words really can’t do it justice. The pictures don’t even really give you the emotion. Awestruck.
Sunday afternoon we traveled back to Athens quite uneventfully and were able to prepare for another week.
I promise there are photos complete with exciting captions here!
